Our story

Since our launch in 2023, we have connected with new authors developing non-fiction, children’s books, and engaging workbooks. With each book we are committed to diversity and quality. We hope that our books will inspire more students from underrepresented groups to pursue careers in STEM, and to support each person currently in a technical profession with an expanded community.

ELMM Press is working to lift up under-represented voices in STEM:

  • Publishing books and other resources that reflect the experiences and perspectives of underrepresented groups.
  • Providing mentorship and support to authors from underrepresented groups.
  • Partnering with other organizations to raise awareness of the importance of diversity in STEM.

ELMM Press is committed to making STEM more inclusive and accessible to everyone. We believe that everyone has the potential to succeed in technically challenging and rewarding careers, regardless of their background.

Voices we love

Taylor's Toy

Written by Julianne Choy

Illustrated by Maria Hecher

Meet Taylor the kitten!

She just broke her toy and is ready to go to the store to buy a new one, when her older sister Katniss explains that she can use the engineering design process to design a new toy herself! Throughout the book Taylor asks questions and learns the ins and outs of the engineering process, all with Katniss as her mentor and guide. You and your child can follow along with Taylor as she defines the requirements, brainstorms different ideas, and prototypes her design for test! Each spread features bright colorful illustrations and fun rhyming phrases to keep even the youngest readers engaged.

Publisher: Independently Published, October 30, 2021

The joy of Taylor's Toy:

Discover that feeling of pride and accomplishment that comes with creating something yourself. This children's book is perfect (purr-fect?) for inquisitive children in your life, as well as for parents looking for a cute refresher on the engineering design process. Engineering doesn't have to be scary... "no need to fret. Let's design something new, even better I bet!"

Daddy, How Do Planes Fly?

by Chris Ryan Miller

"Daddy, How Do Planes Fly?" is a dynamic introduction into the fantasy of flight. From Chris, "The title is inspired by the specific question I once asked my father. The question can be asked to whomever though, so I ask you make that personal to the reader! This story is also a direct need I sought to fill from my community outreach to leave a piece of me with students. This brightly illustrated story shows children the primary principles of flight: roll, pitch, yaw, and thrust. What better way to introduce a strong vocabulary and airplane feature recognition to young readers as they take their first steps on the road to independent reading."

Publisher: Christopher Miller, November 20, 2011

Why we love this children's book:

Chris Miller introduced himself to me as a aspiring aerospace manager... oh, and a children's book author! It was the first time "someone like me" had shared that they had taken the courageous leap to create a book of their own to promote STEM to the next generation. I love the charming inquiry from a girl and boy. And the simple, welcoming way the author explains the basics of aerospace engineering in an accessible, fun way. But mainly I love that Chris's willingness to take the leap and self-publish planted the seeds in my brain that I might one day do the same.

Why we love Wendy, and anything she writes:

In the face of the age-old belief that flexible work schedules are 'career limiting,' Wendy boldly challenged this notion. In this engaging read, Wendy reveals how she applied her small business owner mindset to a corporate environment.

In an era where many companies are scaling back on work-from-home and hybrid options, this book is a must-read for every working parent seeking to craft their unique path to flexibility.

Retaining Women in Engineering

by Robert N. Stavig & Alissa R. Stavig, MD

The daughter-father team of Alissa and Robert Stavig comes from two different STEM fields. He is an engineer. She is a doctor. Women make up 35% of MDs (and nearly half of medical school graduates are woman!), but women only make up 15% of engineers. They wanted to know why, and what can be done about it.

This textbook takes industry standard principles, such as lean and the A3 problem solving process, and reimagine them as tools to empower women in engineer.

What stood out to us:

While getting girls interested in STEM is a hugely valuable endeavor, it is only part of the solution if we want to close the gender gap in engineering. Retention matters.

We also appreciate that a lot of the messaging within is written from the perspective of an ally, and directed towards aspiring allies in leadership.
